Pancreatitis
Definition
Acute Pancreatitis: the sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms can range from feelings of mild discomfort to a major, life-threatening illness. Most children recover completely after treatment. [1]
Chronic Pancreatitis: inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal, or gets worse over time. It can lead to permanent damage. [1]
Cause and Side Effects
Etiology:
Genetic problems [1], trauma following an accident [1], certain medications [2], gallstones, problems in the anatomy of the ducts (tubes) in the liver or pancreas [2]
Signs and Symptoms:
Swollen abdomen and vomiting
Complications:
Diabetes, Pseudo cysts, Infection, hemorrhage, Kidney failure, Malnutrition, Pancreatic cancer
Tips For Documentation
It is important to document the presence of “pancreatitis” to accurately reflect the severity of illness and complexity of care. All diagnoses must be clearly documented by a provider. Specific documentation is critical for proper code assignment.
Step 1: Provider documents pancreatitis when patient meets criteria.
Step 2: Provider documents the type of pancreatitis (acute or chronic).
Step 3: Provider must stipulate the underlying cause.
